Unplugged

by Ryan G. Van Cleave, Unplugged Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Unplugged books, WARNING: This video game may impair your judgment. It may cause sleep deprivation, alienation of friends and family, weight loss or gain, neglect of one's basic needs as well as the needs of loved ones and/or dependents, and decreased performance on the job. The distinction between fantasy and reality may become blurred. Play at your own risk. Not responsible for suicide attempts, whether failed or successful. No such warning was included on the latest and greatest release from the Warcraft series of massive multiplayer on-line role-playing games (MMORPGs)--World of Warcraft (WoW). So when Ryan Van Cleave--a college professor, husband, father, and one of the 11.5 million Warcraft subscribers worldwide--found himself teetering on the edge of the Arlington Memorial Bridge, he had no one to blame but himself. He had neglected his wife and children and had jeopardized his livelihood, all for the rush of living a life of high adventure in a virtual world. Ultimately, Ryan decided to live, but not for the sake of his family or for a newly found love of life: he had to get back home for his evening session of Warcraft. A fabulously written and gripping tale, Unplugged takes us on a journey through Ryan's semi-reclusive life with video games at the center of his experiences. Even when he was sexually molested by a young school teacher at age eleven, it was the promise of a new video game that lured him to her house. As Ryan's life progresses, we witness the evolution of videogames--from simple two-button consoles to today's complicated multi-key technology, brilliantly designed to keep the user actively participating. As is the case with most recovering addicts, Ryan eventually hits rock bottom and shares with the reader his ongoing battle to control his impulses to play, providing prescriptive advice and resources for those caught in the grip of this very real addiction.

Theory Of Addiction

by Robert West, Theory Of Addiction Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Theory Of Addiction books, The word ‘addiction’ these days is used to refer toa chronic condition where there is an unhealthily powerful motivation to engage in a particularbehaviour. This can be driven by many different factors – physiological, psychological, environmental and social. If we say that it is all about X, we miss V, W, Y and Z. So, some people thinkaddicts are using drugs to escape from unhappy lives, feelings of anxiety and so on; many are. Somepeople think drugs become addictive because they alter the brain chemistry to create powerfulurges; that is often true. Others think that drug taking is about seeking after pleasure;often it is. Some take the view that addiction is a choice – addicts weigh up the pros and cons ofdoing what they do and decide the former outweigh the latter. Yet others believe that addictssuffer from poor impulse control; that is often true… And so it goes on. When you look at the evidence, you see that all these positionscapture important aspects of the problem – but they are not complete explanations.Neuroscience can help us delve more deeply into some of these explanations, while the behavioural andsocial sciences are better at exploring others. We need a model that puts all this together in away that can help us decide what to do in different cases. Should we prescribe a drug, give theperson some ‘tender loving care’, put them in prison or what? Theory of Addictionprovides this synthesis. The first edition was well received: ‘Throughout the book the reader is exposed to a vastnumber of useful observations...The theoretical aims are timely, refreshing, ambitious and above allchallenging. It opens up a new way of looking at addiction and has the potential to move the fieldof addiction a considerable leap forward. Thus we wholeheartedly would like to recommend thebook for students as well as scholars. Read and learn!’ Nordic Studies on Alcoholand Drugs ‘The book provides a comprehensive review of existingtheories - over 30 in all - and this synthesis of theories constitutes an important contribution in andof itself... West is to be commended for his synthesis of addiction theories that spanneurobiology, psychology and social science and for his insights into what remainsunexplained.’ Addiction This new edition of Theory of Addiction builds on the first, including additional theories in the field, a more developed specification of PRIME theory andanalysis of the expanding evidence base. With this important new information, Theory of Addiction willcontinue to be essential reading for all those working in addiction, from student to experiencedpractitioner – as urged above, Read and learn!

Heroinsucht Heroin Addiction

by J.J. Platt, Heroinsucht Heroin Addiction Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format.

Game Addiction

by Neils Clark, Game Addiction Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Game Addiction books, An eleven-year-old boy strangled an elderly woman for the equivalent of five dollars in 2007, then buried her body under a thin layer of sand. He told the police that he needed the money to play online videogames. Just a month later, an eight-year-old Norwegian boy saved his younger sister’s life by threatening an attacking moose and then feigning death when the moose attacked him—skills he said he learned while playing World of Warcraft. As these two instances show, videogames affect the minds, bodies, and lives of millions of gamers, negatively and positively. This book approaches videogame addiction from a cross-disciplinary perspective, bridging the divide between liberal arts academics and clinical researchers. The topic of addiction is examined neutrally, using accepted research in neuroscience, media studies, and developmental psychology.
